गुढी पाडवा (११ एप्रिल २००९)
The Maharashtra Mandal of Jacksonville,
Florida celebrated the "Gudhi Padwa" function on April 11, 2009. The
festival which marks the Hindu New Year, according to the Lunar
calendar, was celebrated at J. Allen Axson Montessori School. The
event held starting at 10.00 AM was celebrated by members with
gaiety and festivity.
The inauguration of the program was done with an overview of the "Gudhi
Padwa" in Marathi and then with an explanation in English. This was
followed by the task of raising the "Gudhi".
This was followed by the featured program of the day, "Nritya-Ganga"
by Mrs. Aparna Bhide-Matange. She performed various breath-taking
Bharat Natyam dances on the back ground of various Marathi
compositions. Each performance was preceded by a beautiful
explanation of the composition, given by Mrs. Aparna Bhide-Matange,
herself. The event which lasted for 90 minutes left the entire
audience captivated.
The coup-de-grace of the day was "Pangat" style lunch which
concluded the day. A spate of volunteers took turns in delivering a
traditional "Maharashtrian" style lunch to the members. A stark
contrast from the modern buffet-style of eating, the lunch featured
"Asalee" Maharashtrian dishes of Shrikhand, Poori, Batata wada and
Masale Bhat.
Mrs. Matange also graciously judged the kids’ sketching competition.
Winner of the competition was Ms. Riya Sawant followed by Ms. Amita
Tilak and Ms.Tanvi Madkaiker respectively.

EC would sincerely like to thank all the
volunteers who worked hard in various capacities in several areas
including set-up, photography, video-shooting, decoration, rangoli
drawing, serving food and clean-up.
